DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Welcome to "not just another defensive driving program".  We won’t tell you not to drink and drive; you already know that.  We're not going to tell you not to exceed the speed limit; because you'll continue to do what you've been doing while police are not watching you. We're not going to review many of the things you already know. If you want statistics on highway deaths, you won’t find any here, although the National highway Traffic Safety Administration Director stated “up to two-thirds of the deaths involved road rage or aggressive driving”.

This program is a bit unique because we want to concentrate on today’s hostile driving environment and lack of sensitive drivers.  We say hostile, but you could also call it confrontational, aggressive, dangerous, or just plain stupid.

Our objective is to provide logical, factual information to help you make better driving decisions.  We know that a training program won't change attitudes, but we believe, if you learn and use this information you'll be a better safer driver after all what could be more exciting than information that will help save your life or the lives of others?  We'll do our best to make this program as informative as it is exciting.

One thing we do know is the vast majority of commuters are stressed on their daily drive to and from work.  We also know that feeling stress behind the wheel may be a familiar sensation, but medical experts state it could be a health hazard.  Studies have shown that the longer distances you commute in your vehicle, the higher the driver’s blood pressure.  This also leads to an increase in job frustration and illness.  Let’s face it; driving in traffic is a tough job, even in the best of conditions.  When you combine stress and frustration with so many poor drivers out there on the road, it just drives us good drivers crazy.

MY ZONE -worker alert system

stop accident

equip your hard hats with the best practice personal safety system

How it works

Good for Employees

All too often construction workers are injured and sometimes killed by slow moving site vehicles. This is mainly due to a lack of awareness, either from ignorance of the threat or when full attention is not being paid to the immediate working environment.

MyZone can help prevent accidents by giving ownership of personal safety back to the individual. This unique technology alerts the wearer via a receiver attached to their hard hat which responds to the detected threat by vibrating for a couple of seconds, warning directly that a danger is present.

Tests show that this is a more effective warning method than a siren, flashing light, radar sensor or warning signs which between them create sign pollution/ desensitisation and contribute to a background saturation of sound that fails to notify of a real, immediate and personal danger.

All the wearer need do is clip the MyZone receiver onto their hard hat and react to the vibrating warnings. There are no fiddly switches – once it’s on, it’s ON!

MyZone enabled sites allow the employee to take control of their own personal exclusion area, removing the dependency on how others operate potential hazards on site.

MyZone is solely designed with personal protection in mind. No other data is collected, and there’s no feedback to management.

Continually tracking defined hazards, MyZone can intelligently monitor up to 64 individual threats (such as site vehicles) and provide warnings for each hazard with 360º capability, addressing any vehicular ‘blind spots’. MyZone can even detect and analyse hidden threats behind walls or other obstacles.

MyZone is suitable for noisy environments and does not contribute to noise pollution with the discreet buzzer only alerting the individual wearer. It can also be used with ear defenders.

MyZone is an aid to personal awareness only and should be used in addition to established on site safe working practices.

Good for Employers

Safety behavioural studies show that 63% of accidents and incidents are caused by alpha mode and mistake-led behaviour, otherwise known as ‘daydreaming’ or ‘switching off’. We’ve all experienced this. Not paying attention to our surroundings, with our subconscious just going through the motions.

MyZone is a personal vibrating alarm, worn inside the hard-hat, alerting site workers to a real and immediate danger, allowing them to take evasive action before possible injury.

MyZone is a demand-led solution, driven by an employer’s duty to use the best available technology, not only to remove employees from hazard wherever and whenever possible, but also to ensure any associated litigation against the company is mitigated.

Avoiding hazard in the workplace for all employees, regardless of education or ethnicity, is essential in today’s working environment. MyZone meets these criteria with its simple and non-language dependent functionality. MyZone is instrumental in engaging ALL site personnel to participate in site safety culture and awareness. Making safety-at-work personal, rather than relying solely on the actions of others to avert injury.

MyZone is a cost-effective and scaleable solution to achieving best practice safety standards for your construction site. An initial survey is arranged to agree perceived hazards on your site. From this point MyZone requires minimal client involvement, with full implementation, ongoing technical support, collection, delivery and recycling services all included in the cost.

MyZone not only provides advances in proximity warning systems for the construction industry, but also has wider applications within industry. For example in logistics a MyZone receiver is worn on the worker’s belt and warns the wearer of approaching hazards such as loading vehicles or fork-lift trucks. MyZone can be adapted to provide a hazard management solution within many industry scenarios. If you have a specific application you’d like to discuss with our development team then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

MyZone is an aid to personal awareness only and should be used in addition to established on site safe working practices

Laptop Ergonomics

Laptop Ergonomics is more needed than ever. With an alarming rate of people replacing their desktop with a portable laptop, it is no wonder computer injuries are going up.

To be really honest with you, a laptop does not make the most ergonomic sense. One of the biggest reason is because the screen and the keyboard are attached. It is much harder to incorporate a laptop into an ergonomic workstation. For instance, without a separate keyboard attached, it is impossible to have the laptop screen at your eye level and applying typing ergonomics at the same time. The basis of typing ergonomics is maintaining your wrists at a neutral position. Either way, you are unable to fulfill both (screen at eye level and neutral wrist position) at the same time.

So if you are going to be using your laptop for more than two hours, you should consider replacing it with a desktop

Advanced Headforms for Evaluating Respirator Fit

July 25th, 2013 11:36 am ET - Michael Bergman, MS; Ziqing Zhuang, PhD; Ronald E. Shaffer, PhD

Over three million Americans are required to wear respirators in their workplaces. In order to strive for the highest level of protection, ongoing research is essential for learning more about the factors that affect how respirators fit to the face. As part of this pursuit, NIOSH has developed a new robotic manikin headform (called an “advanced headform”) for respirator fit evaluation research. Use of advanced headforms will greatly expand the opportunities for research into respirator inward leakage, which includes the penetration of particles through the filter itself combined with the leakage around the faceseal. This technology has the potential to aid in respirator design and contribute to the advancement of respirator certification and consensus standards.

NIOSH is focusing on certified N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) for the initial fit evaluation research using the advanced headform. NIOSH-approved N95 respirators are commonly used in the healthcare industry to reduce exposure to respiratory pathogens such as influenza and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This research is being performed in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory (Panama City Beach, FL) and is funded by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
